OVERVIEW
BNY – founded by Alexander Hamilton over 240 years ago – is once again leading from the front. As a global financial institution with offices in 35 countries, BNY collaborated with SwiftConnect and HID to reimagine workplace access. By deploying employee badge in Apple Wallet, BNY staff can use their iPhone or Apple Watch for seamless access to the building. This has eliminated the friction that could occur when an employee enters the office, and sets a new standard for secure and convenient entry across its global portfolio.
THE OPPORTUNITY
As part of a broader workplace modernization strategy, BNY identified physical access as a friction point for employees and administrators alike. Plastic cards, disparate landlord access systems and manual provisioning processes created unnecessary delay and overhead.
BNY needed a secure, scalable solution that could unify the access experience across 110+ sites and 35 countries.
SOLUTIONS & BENEFITS
With SwiftConnect’s connected access platform and HID’s Mobile Access®, BNY implemented employee badge in Apple Wallet, enabling staff to access secure areas simply by holding their iPhone or Apple Watch near a reader. This has transformed a previously manual, inconsistent process into a seamless, mobile-first experience that’s easy, convenient, and private—mirroring the way employees already use their devices outside of the office in their everyday life.
“The whole idea of people navigating around our facilities globally – it just brings a smile to your face. But it really brings a smile to their faces – because now, when they come to work, they come with their iPhone! They don’t need to come with their old ID badge. That’s powerful.”
– Ken Damstrom, Global Head of Corporate Security
The SwiftConnect platform integrates directly with BNY’s existing identity and access management (IAM) and physical access control systems (PACS), eliminating the need for rip-and-replace upgrades. Provisioning and lifecycle management of employee badge in Apple Wallet for their workforce is fully automated, reducing the administrative burden on IT and security teams.
The result will be a unified, consistent experience across BNY’s global real estate footprint – one that boosts operational efficiency, strengthens security posture, and delivers a user-friendly experience that employees actually enjoy.
HOW IT WORKS
SwiftConnect adds employee badge in Apple Wallet to connect BNY’s identity systems with mobile platforms and building access infrastructure.
Once added, employees can hold their device near an HID Signo™ reader to gain entry. With Express Mode, employees don’t need to wake or unlock their iPhone or Apple Watch to use employee badge in Apple Wallet. If their iPhone needs a charge, employee badge in Apple Wallet will still work. Power Reserve provides up to five hours of access, so employees can still access the building. Credentials are stored securely on the iPhone and Apple Watch which helps keep their data private and secure.
THE ACCESS EXPERIENCE
- Employees simply download the BNY app, authenticate using BNY’s Single Sign-On, and add their employee badge to Apple Wallet.
- Once added, they enjoy effortless access to secured areas like lobbies, turnstiles, elevators, workspaces, and every place that supports plastic badges by just tapping their Apple device on a reader. No need to unlock, open an app, or carry a physical badge.
- Employee badges are stored securely on the embedded secure element within the user’s iPhone or Apple Watch.
A GLOBAL FOOTPRINT
Following the successful launch at their global headquarters in New York City, BNY expanded the program to other strategic hubs, including Lake Mary, Florida; London; and Poland. As part of its long-term strategy, the firm sees seamless, mobile-first access as a critical component of a modern workplace, as well as a key enabler of global consistency, security, and pride. BNY and SwiftConnect continue to expand this program across its global employee base.
